Doc Moccasin began in 2010, when guitarist/vocalist Code Cochran, drummer Mike Newsome, and guitarist/vocalist Cody Fields got together in Green Cove Springs, Florida, and began playing cover tunes together. They started out playing songs by artists such as Johnny Cash, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Charlie Daniels, and Waylon Jennings. They soon put together Doc Moccasin's first original song, “Bound For Nowhere”.

After playing a couple of local shows, Cody Fields left the band temporarily, and Kevin Johns, a friend of the band members from Jacksonville, joined the band as their bassist. Cody came back to the band, and another guitarist, Jacob Smith, also joined.. The band continued to play shows in the local area and write more original material.

Cody Fields eventually left the band for good, leaving Code Cochran to handle all the lead vocals.

Over the next few years, there were a few lineup changes in the band. Jacob took his leave, and guitarist James Ternullo joined for a time, during which Doc Moccasin recorded a demo of their originals.

Around 2013, Mike Newsome made the switch from drums to guitar, and Mike's brother Cliff took over the drum position. When work and school responsibilities made it necessary for Cliff to leave the band, Doc Moccasin began the search for a new drummer.

By 2016, the band had completed the first Doc Moccasin album, “Too Fast to Die Young”, while searching for a new drummer. John Priest, former drummer for the professional band Radio Star, had moved to St. Augustine, Florida, soon after the album was released. John was exploring musical opportunities in the area, and answered an online ad about the vacant drum position. After meeting with the band, he came by to see if the band was a good fit, and the band's lineup was solidified.

Since 2016, the band has continued playing shows and composing and recording more original material. A couple of singers came and went, and then, in 2025, Doc Moccasin released their second album, “The Great Southern Gothic”, with Code once again handling lead vocal duties, in addition to lead guitar.

As of 2026, founding member Mike Newsome is taking a step back from Doc Moccasin to focus on other projects and life responsibilities. He is still, and will always be, a member of the Doc Moccasin tribe, and he will still be working with us in various ways as his schedule allows. The band will be playing primarily as a trio for now, but you will still see Mike at our shows, and we plan on having him play a few songs with us at select performances in the future.

The band continues working on new material, with plans to record again in the near future. We hope you will join us on the journey.
